The aim of the study was to understand how children perceive and view child abuse and neglect, and the disclosure of risk situations, and how the cultural values prohibited children’s disclosure of child abuse and neglect. Four focus groups were conducted with fifteen local children in middle childhood. The study provided support that the local children are competent to express their opinions and views on the topics affecting them. In the study, most of the children were sensitive to physical abuse, emotional abuse, and child neglect. However, their sensitivity of child sexual abuse was relatively limited which might relate to the Chinese culture. Findings also showed that filial piety in Chinese culture affected children’s disclosure of victimization due to the notion that they had to protect their parents as well as the family. The study provided knowledge for professionals and child protection services about how they can improve the prevention work of child abuse and neglect in the future.
