Title

Bullying in adolescents' eyes : a qualitative study of the adolescents' perceptions and experiences of bullying in Macao

English Abstract

Bullying prevalence is very high among adolescents in Macao according to two previous surveys (Wan, 2008; 2013); but there are few studies exploring the adolescents’ subjective views of bullying. Thus, in this study, six local adolescents aged from twelve to eighteen and studying in local secondary schools, were recruited to participate in semi-structured interviews. A Collage Life-story Elicitation Technique (CLET) was applied to help scaffold the adolescents’ perceptions and experiences of bullying. The participants provided their views of bullying, including their attitudes and views of bullying, bullying victims’ vulnerability, and the bystanders’ reactions in bullying events, in both their collages and narratives. The findings provided valuable information for the local scholars and practitioners to have a better understanding of how bullying happened among adolescents and plan effective anti-bullying strategies and interventions.
