Abstract
The complaint of the inadequacy of language is a universal phenomenon in philosophical traditions in both China and the West. However, those who negate language often speak more, not less, to refer to what is supposed to be inexpressible, and Zhuangzi is the best representative of such an “ironic pattern” among all the ancient Chinese philosophers. By reading several passages in the book Zhuangzi in comparison with Western philosophers, notably Wittgenstein and Aristotle, this essay explores the concepts of understanding and knowledge in Zhuangzi and their implications for humanistic studies today.
