Abstract
Objective:To compare the basic core competencies of 3 group of Chinese nursing students and explore related factors leading to their differences. Methods:The questionnaire approach was adopted to evaluate year 4 student’s caring ability and empathy with 183 participants from three Nursing Colleges. Instruments included (1)Caring Dimensions Inventory; (2)The Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Results:Findings showed that the average score of caring ability of all participants was higher than 75. Empathy score in College A was 66. 35, College B was 64. 37, and College C was 59. 23. (C) respectively. College A has a statistically better results in the degree of feeling being cared, social activity participation and caring ability and empathy. Possible reasons were explored. Involvement in social activities and feeling cared were also found to be positively correlated with empathy. Conclusions:The study suggested that a caring environment with the increased input from nursing faculties and involvement in social activities may contribute a better performance in nursing student basic core competencies.
