Abstract
Abstract : This essay discusses issues relating to identity, culture and nationalism in the context of post-colonial globalization in order to address the possibility of human societies / communities living together harmoniously and the conditions which may be necessary, if not sufficient, to sustain this ‘harmony’. It takes a philosophical perspective, posing the question ‘What is western culture?’, and within this broadly philosophical context also questions whether the ‘Enlightenment project’ is a purely Western affair. In seeking a concept or set of values that might be called ‘universal’ the essay briefly surveys three prominent ‘rationalist’ western philosophers who have been influential over the past 200 years or so. It ‘concludes’ by suggesting that existentialism may be the most sustainable philosophical standpoint in our globalised and culturally diverse human world.
