Abstract
Abstract : Objective: Selecting the area of research, target population and the location of the tumour(s). It was important to : (1) Collect epidemiological data on mortality from Malignant Tumours at the national, district and county level; (2) Collect data concerning patients admitted with Lung, Uterus, Breast, Stomach, Rectum and Prostate Cancer to Santa Luzia Hospital in Viana do Castelo between 1st January and 31st December 2001; (3) Describe the District and Health Institutions; (4) Know the Malignant Tumours Program and Projects implemented in Health Centres; (5) Do a documental analysis of the patients' medical records; (6) Do exploratory interviews with "privileged witnesses". Methods: Documental analysis and formal, informal and exploratory interviews with key elements of the Health Institutions, namely the Director of Services, the Doctor responsible for the Program, a Doctor of a Health Centre and the Chief Nurses of the Centres (or their substitutes). These institutions seemed to be privileged territory to develop the research, since it is in Primary Health Care that the Education for Health should assume a leading role concerning Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Result: Considering the epidemiology of cancer as essential for an effective intervention and that reactivating the oncology record of the Local Health System of Alto-Minho constituted a commitment for the year 2000, I verified the mentioned record hadn't yet been completely reactivated. I observed some uncertainty the data of implementation of the mentioned Program, a lack of knowledge about the development of the projects, that only some of the activities were being developed, whose record is somewhat deficient. The assessment seemed to lack consistency. The easiness of tracing was the reason mentioned by Health Professionals for the Breast and Uterus Cancer Prevention Projects to be the ones most implemented. Concerning documental analysis, the constraints focused on the difficult access to the medical records in the Central Archive and its organisation. The existence of records with insufficient or inexistent data, namely on profession, date of diagnosis, institution of referral of the patients and their progress, presented another difficulty. Conclusion: Considering the results, it seems important to continue with the research, questioning these phenomena and their relationships. Paragraph Headings: 1. Development and Findings 1.1.
