- Abstract
- Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate if an association exists between restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and the microsatellite polymorphism in the promoter of heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) gene, which modulates the level of HO-1 transcription. HO-1 can be induced by balloon injury and inhibits neointima formation as well as vascular wall inflammation through the action of endogenous carbon monoxide and biliverdin. Methods This retrospective study included 118 Chinese patients with coronary artery disease (CAD)(92,em;mean age 62.3 years±9.8years) who underwent stent implantation during 1996-2002. Angiographic follow-up was performed three months later to determine if in-stent implantation during 1996-2002. Microsatellite polymorphism, the number of (GT)n repeats, was confirmed using PCR amplification and electrophoresis. Selected samples were sequenced by means of Sanger's method. The association between restenosis and the microsatellite polymprphism in the HO-1 gene promoter was assessed by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results In-stent restenosis was found in 68 (58%) out of 118 patients. CAD patients with <25GT repeats (47.5% vs 68.4%, P=0.022). Multivariate analysis reveals a similar result after controlling certain confounding factors (odd ratio 0.405, 95%CI 0.189 TO 0.868,P=0.025). Conclusion In this study population, short (GT)n repeats of HO-Q gene promoter were associated with reduced post-PCI restenosis, which confirmed that genetic risk factors have certain effects on in-stent restenosis after PCI with stent implantation.
