Abstract
Objective: The two objectives of this paper are to contribute to a better understanding of the existence of rhythmic alternations in depressed patients and to synchronise this knowledge with the development of treatment for depression. Methods: Starting from the presupposition that experiences vary from person to person, in line with their vulnerabilities (either biogenetic or personality-based) and their living circumstances, a sample of 20 in-patients of the Hospital Unit in Coimbra (Portugal) was examined. Two methods were used: at the first stage, a biometric method to observe sleeping and waking patterns and at a second stage a psychological assessment method. Thus, and in order to facilitate the implementation of the project, a mixed study was created (transversal, with a longitudinal component). As such, the gathering of data took place in two stages: at hospital admission and discharge. Results: The results obtained demonstrate that certain life events may trigger depression, given that they provoke changed in biological rhythms, particularly in the sleeping-waking rhythm. It was also observed that more vigorous (circadian type) and more introverted individuals (personality) are more sensitive to desynchronosis and, in turn, more vulnerable to depression. Conclusion: From a preventative perspective, the possibility of identifying personality factor and circadian types proved to be essential to therapeutic intervention. Paragraph Headings: 1.
