- Abstract
- Objective: The current treatment of common bile duct lithiasis consists of endoscopic stone extraction followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy. With the improving of laparoscopic techniques an alternative single-stage treatment was introduced for the patients suffering from common bile duct stones. The Authors report their initial experience in the laparoscopic management of this pathology. Methods: From November 2001 to March 2004 256 patients underwent to videolaparoscopic cholecystectomy in our Department of General Surgery and 32 cases of common bile duct lithiasis were suspected. The thirty patients were subdivided into two groups. In group A the patients received single-stage treatment. Results: The primary end point was hospital stay from the start of treatment. Secondary end point included success rates, conversion rates, morbidity, and mortality. Conclusion: The data obtained were similar to those of the literature and it is clear that the single-stage treatment has a shorter hospitalization than the sequential management.
