- Abstract
- Objective: To review the experience of treatment of thymic tumor in 105 cases. Methods 105 patients with thymic tumor were operated and confirmed pathologically from March 1977 to November 2002 in our department. According to Masaoka clinical and pathological classification: stage I in 18 cases, stage II in 56 cases, stage III in 26 cases and stage IV in 6 cases. 20 cases accompanied with Myasthenia gravis in this group. According to Ossermen typing: type I in 5 cases, type II a in 4 cases, type II in 6 cases, type III in 3 cases, type IV in 2 cases. Results: Total excision in 100 cases, partial excision in 5 cases with postoperative radiotherapy. There were one postopertive death attributed to respiratory faliure due to crisis of Myasthenia gravis and other104 cases were cured. 1 case relapsed and 1 case with metastasis to lung postoperatively 2 to 3 years after operation. Conclusion: At present, surgical resection is the main therapeutic method to tumor of thyma. Mediastinotomy to resection of thyma and 10 areas of fat tissue in mediastinum is the main way to operation. Thymic tumor is a potential malignant disease and cases beyond stage I must undergo postoperative radiotherapy. Postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy are useful to improve to mortality rate of cases with relapse and metastasis. Paragraph Headings： 1. Material and methods 2. Results 3. Discussion
