Abstract
Objective: To review the experience of diagnosis and treatment of 238 cases of primary mediastinal tumors which were operated and confirmed pathologically from March 1997 to November 2002 in our hospital. Methods: Among the resected primary mediastinal tumors in this series of patients, the incidence of thymic tumor was 43.7%, complicated by myasthenia gravis in 19 cases. Crisis occured in 9 cases. Teratoid tumor accounted for 16.4%, neurogenic tumor 14.7%, intrathoracic goiter 10.9%, mediastinal cyst 7.1%, other kind of rate tumor 7.1% respectively. Results: Radical excision in 229 cases (96.2%), partial excision in 9 cases and performed postoperative radiotherapy simultaneoulsy. There was one postoperative death attributed to respiratory failure caused by myasthenia gravis crisis. The other 237 cases were cured. Conclusion: Chest X-ray of CT are the main effective techniques in diagnosis and differentiation for mediastinal tumors. Surgical resection is the effective means for therapy. The importance of early and timely diagnosis of mediastinal tumors is emphasized. Surgical approach and technique varied due to location of tumor. Paragraph Headings: 1. Clinical Data 1.1.
