Abstract The language of English is getting more important and useful in Macau, as it is the second language of the people in Macau. Children start to listen and learn English when they are just babies. People in Macau concern English a lot, because people think this is a bridge to have a good school and have a good job in the future. Schools in Macau starting from Kindergarten will learn English; they will listen to songs and sing English songs. As a result, English plays an important role in Macau. This project is proposed because many teachers and parents are concern about their children's English speaking proficiency. Parents find out their children have a good knowledge about English, but students are reluctant to speak or to express themselves in English. Most children do not feel comfortable speaking in English. Therefore, this research is to investigate the students of the Primary 5 Chinese students who are studying in a Chinese-instructed medium school. To what extent do they expose to English materials (such as English books, magazines, movies, etc.) outside the school? Also with the increase of more oral activities, (such as role-play, storytelling, presentation and discussion in class) will that increase students' speaking performance? This research will show the results of the investigation through questionnaires, group interviews, and the use of pre-test and post-test. This research project may help to increase the speaking performances of the Chinese primary students.
