Title

MFAH(H) 000 (SAMPLE) Parade of caiqing on deity's birthdays : study of lion dance in Macau (1921-present)

English Abstract

The traditional deity's parade, that is, the statue or tablet of deity is invited out of the temple and paraded around the temple community to form a ritual space. The ritual space, commonly, within the temple community. Through the deity's parade, the resident in the ritual space is blessed by the deity. The lions appeared in the parade mainly because the lion has the function of warding off ill luck. In Macau, there is independent lion's caiging parade. Similar with deity's parade the caiging parade organized on deity's birthday and lions appeared in the parade. However, there is not the statue or tablet of deity in the caiging parade, it's the lion that blessing the people. In addition, the caiging parade dose not form a ritual space as it composed of people who accept caiqing, namely, the lion does not bless all the people in the parade route, it only blesses the people who accept caiging. Through field investigation and in-depth interviews with the Macau sports society who organized the lion's caiqing parade, this paper reveals that Macau's caiqing parade is a relic of traditional deity's parade. It is also a manifestation of the weakening of religion of deity's parade in the process of modernization and the secularization of traditional ritual space.
