EMBA 000 (SAMPLE) Sources of stress, emotion and turnover intention in Japanese firms

English Abstract

ABSTRACT Contemporary firms face intense competition. As a result, more and more employees encounter high levels of stress. As different firms have different management styles, and the management focus is also different, stress experiences and the source of stressors are also different under different management styles. However, research has found that many companies have not realized this yet, especially among Japanese subsidiaries in China.Thus, this study seeks to identify the stressors that influence the staffis'emotion and to analyze the relationship of negative emotion with turnover intention within Japanese subsidiaries in China. Through this analysis, organizations can better understand the shortcomings of management styles among Japanese subsidiaries and provide better suggestions for change and improvement. Therefore, this thesis explores the most significant stressors for employees in Japanese subsidiaries in China by focusing on the relationships between stressors and emotion, emotion and turnover intention. The data were collected from 100 office employees’and 100 frontline workers’perspective in a Japanese subsidiary in Zhuhai, China. Based on the results of regression analysis, the findings indicate that time stressors are negative related to negative emotion and are not significant; encounter Stressors are significantly positive with negative emotion; situational stressors are positive related to negative emotion but are not significant; anticipatory stressors are significantly positive with negative emotion; and negative emotion are significantly positive with turnover intention. According to our analysis result,negative emotion is not the mediator for work stressors and turnover intention. This study intends to provide some useful insights for Japanese subsidiaries in China, and the results may help Japanese subsidiaries in China better recognize and understand the important influence of staffs" emotion on tunover intention. The study also seeks to determine the defects within management methods and suggest improvements for methods correspondingly.
