The Penal Code of Macao was promulgated in 1995 with its draft originally written in Portuguese and was composed according to the equivalent code in Portuguese. Although Macao has its own localized legal system, Portuguese retains its power in the legal system as the line 'The Portuguese version shall prevail in case of any dispute’ is clearly stated in every code. Given such a legal standing of the languages involved, translating the Macao Penal Code into English based on the Chinese version can be rather challenging. This report demonstrates the full process of the translation, from Chinese to English, starting from source text analysis. After briefly introducing the background information of the Penal code, the report goes further into features found in the source text, where examples are shown accordingly. The focus then switches to target text analysis, starting with a short discussion of the language of the law and some of its leading features. Lastly, the translation process, demonstrating how the translation was done and the reason behind every decision. Strategy and methods used will be explained in details by showing example sentences. The report also includes the aids and resources that I turned to in times of doubt during my translation process.
