Title

The use of ecological model to discuss sport activities in residential college and the implications to students' development : a case study from a residential college in University of Macau

English Abstract

Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the current situation of students' physical activity and to analyse the promotion of physical activity in a residential college in the University of Macau. This study also provided suggestions and a theoretical foundation for the future development of a health promoting programme in the residential college based on the ecological model of healthy behaviour development. Methods: To comprehensively view the status quo and the environment and policy of physical activity development in the residential college, students' physical activity status is collected by a sport activity record table and a fitness tracker. In addition, the environment of physical activity promotion in the university and the residential college is categorised and summarised according to the content analysis of relevant documents. Result: Students generally spend their physical activity hours at the residential college (RC) in three activities: the fitness club; residential college sports' team training and competitions; and the sports activities held by residential tutors (RT), residential assistants (RA) and house associations (HA). According to the content analysis of the relevant documents, both the university and the residential college have created an appropriate policy environment and behaviour setting for promoting physical activity among students. The characteristics of the physical activity environment at both the university and the residential college are ecologically friendly, as both the hardware and software required for physical activity are provided. However, the proportions of the PE curriculum model, the social media approaches and the cooperation between the university and the residential college in the physical activity promotion process could be enhanced. Manpower and financial resources should have a role in physical activity promotion if they are used to develop organisations and activities with greater participation. Gender differences and students' interests should receive more attention in the future. Keywords: Physical Activity Development, Residential College, Ecological Model
