Title

Impact of financial development on the FDI technology spillovers in China

English Abstract

Discussions about the impact of financial development on FDI technology spillovers have existed for a long time. In recent years, a large amount of FDI inflow has been in China. Many studies have shown that FDI technology spillovers depend not only on the features and motivation of FDI, but also on the host country's absorptive capability. The absorptive capability describes the factors affecting FDI spillovers in host countries, mostly comprising research and development (R&D), human resources, capital stock and financial development. A country's GDP cannot grow without financial support, especially along with the rapid development of the country's financial system reform. Therefore, as an important measurement index, there is theoretical and practical significance in researching the impact of financial development on FDI technology spillovers. This paper first analyzes the standard of measurement corresponding to financial development, which is the concrete manifestation of financial development. It then discusses the impact of FDI technology spillovers on per working capita GDP by using empirical analysis based on China's provincial panel data from the aspects of R&D, human resources, international trade, capital stock and financial development. The results of the theoretical model are tested and following conclusions are drawn: First, the impact of financial development on technology spillovers has a significant threshold effect. The FDI has a role in promoting per working capita GDP when the financial development level exceeds a certain degree. Second, I use two dimensions to measure financial development: financial scale development and financial efficiency development, the empirical results show that spillovers is more apparently when I choose financial efficiency development to present the financial development level. Key words: Financial Scale Development, Financial Efficiency Development, Financial Development, FDI, Technology Spillovers, Threshold Effect.
