ABSTRACT Domestic violence is a form of violence and it is generally known that all forms of violence are not acceptable, particularly domestic violence. There are different domestic violence affecting a variety of people, including domestic violence against male, women, the elderly or the child, etc. This thesis is mainly aimed at studying gender violence between men and women, especially domestic violence against women. Combating domestic violence should be the result of the joint efforts of all mankind. Therefore, this thesis begins with introduction of domestic violence and analyzes the extent of problem. It is divided into two parts. At the international level, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a series of measures, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). These international norms provide a set of international standards for the States parties to perform. As one of the States parties to the CEDAW, China should actively pursue its obligations and follow the international obligations to curb domestic violence. Therefore, the second part of the thesis first analyzes the development of relevant provisions on domestic violence in China before the adoption of Anti- Domestic Violence Law. Then it starts to examine the contemporary legal measures on domestic violence and effectiveness of remedies available in China. By comparing the laws of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau, the weakness of the Anti-Domestic Violence Law in China are explored in this thesis, so that the legal system can be improved.
