English Abstract

Abstract For all translators, establishing the equivalence between the source text and the target text is always the major goal of translation, and this goal is particularly crucial for translators of legal texts. The objective of this dissertation is to discuss and analyze the complexity of the translation of legal texts. By applying the translation theory into practice, trying to find an appropriate approach for obtaining the maximum equivalence in legal translation. The present study mainly consists of two parts: the theoretical and the practical part. The theoretical part is based on the exploration of the modern translation theory and theory of legal translation from the perspective of the concept of textual genre. In the practical part, it is the case study of the translation of Portugal's Código Civil Anotado, from Portuguese into Chinese. Through the analysis of a privileged text of the law, the present study examined the importance of the fundamental elements of the translation technique in the scope of legal translation; identifies some of the most common translation problems generated in the process of legal translation; presents the most appropriate method and techniques for this type of translation and finally, proposes a guidance to resolve the problems which can be encountered in the current or future legal translations in Macao. KEYWORDS: legal translation, Código Civil Anotado, concept of textual genre, equivalence in translation
