Title

A new era of regulation of genetically modified food labeling : a comparative EU, US, and China approach

English Abstract

Arguments about the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in foodstuff have been expressed all over the world ever since last century. With regard to the fast developing technology and the unique nature of genetically modified food or so-called "GM food", the world now have agreed on that it is a reasonable compromise for countries to set up specific regulation on GM food labeling to protect the consumer more thoroughly and maintain the normal market order. For now, there are mainly two hostile perspectives regarding this question- the strict regulation camp represented by EU and the loose regulation camp represented by the USA. Despite different national conditions, all of these countries are trying to keep up with the development of technology through perfecting their GM food labeling regulation system. China, as the first country to commercially cultivate genetically modified crops, has also been active in regulating GM food since 2000. However, with years of development of GM technology and the more comprehensive and lasting way it influences people's daily life, the current regulation framework of GM food labeling becomes more and more insufficient to meet people's demand in the new era. With this regard, it is high time the regulation framework of GM food labeling be improved. KEYWORDS Labeling, genetically modified food, GM food labeling, consumer choice, precautionary principle, labeling threshold, positive & negative labeling.
