Title

Computational study of smoke suppression by using water mist and sprinkler fire protection system in high rise building fire

English Abstract

In high rise buildings fire, smoke control plays an important role in it. Smoke can easily spread though the building, therefore, influence the escaping peoples due to the effect of poor visibility and toxic gas. This research mainly focuses on the smoke suppression when water spray system applies in the buildings. The study uses the Fire Dynamic Simulator to explore the suppression reaction between water spray and smoke. A set of simulations were conducted in a simulation model of 20-floor high-rise building. Fire is happened in a room with an open window and open door in the 5th floor. The room and staircase adjoin with corridor. When fire occurs, smoke will spread via corridors from the room at first, then travels to the staircase. Besides, the room are without any fire extinguishing devices. But, three water spray devices are distributed in the corridor roof. Smoke suppression by water spray will only conduct in the corridor. Then, two kinds of fire sources are applied in this simulation, which are heptane and polyurethane. The result shows that water sprinkler fire protection system is capacity to suppress the smoke spreading in high-rise buildings in both kind of fire sources. Water mist fire protection system performs an excellent smoke suppression effect when fire source is heptane. The effect of smoke suppression become more obvious than water sprinkler system. However, in the case of polyurethane fire, smoke suppression’ results are not so impressive by comparing the water sprinkler system.
