Population, pollution, and visibility : creative coding for data visualization
- English Abstract
-
Show / Hidden
This is a creative thesis about data visualization and how it both helps us to see things and simultaneously may serve to hide other things. It is comprised of four original works of creative coding that explore ideas of visibility. The theme of visibility is explored in terms of population, pollution, and media literacy. Each work involves a different way of visualizing data using both hard-coded data and real-time data for the parameters to create distinct works of data visualization. The work is produced using the programming framework Processing and an accompanying set of coding languages. The works are intended to be seen online and draw inspiration from the history of digital art and works which employ randomness as a factor in their design.
