Title

The cultural experiences of Mainland Chinese working in Macau

English Abstract

This paper studied the cross-cultural adaptation of professional Mainland Chinese, who obtain higher education, currently working in the service industry or administrative settings in Macau with working visa. Macau is part of China yet having different cultural and social background compare to its homeland. The in-depth interviews are conducted to study the adjustment process and result of Mainland Chinese to the Macau’s culture in workplace and daily lives. The result shows that the cross-cultural adjustment process is short and not obvious, with no significant difficulties or problems are found. However, the degree of integration to local social network is low, despite the fact that some of them are able to speak the local language (Cantonese), they found it is difficult to establish friendship with local Macau people outside workplace. The founding has implications of Mainland Chinese’s expectation andperception towards the living in Macau.
