Title

Intergenerational and gender differences in the intention to use cybercounseling in Yibin city, mainland China : an application of the extended theory of planned behavior

English Abstract

Background - As information and communication technology (ICT) develops, combining technology and traditional face-to-face counseling has become inevitable in the field of psychological therapy. The modern trend of cybercounseling has tremendous advantages in that it provides additional counseling resources for those who cannot get traditional face-to-face counseling assistance. Many surveys have proven the efficacy and effectiveness of cybercounseling, and though it has increased in popularity, research into the intentions of its use in mainland China is limited. Purpose - This study aims to investigate the intergenerational and gender differences in the intention to use cybercounseling in Yibin city, Sichuan province, mainland China. It also explores the potential relationships between variables in the extended Theory of Planned Behavior (E-TPB) model. Methodology - 1494 participants completed the questionnaire, which tested their responses to ten variables from the E-TPB model: intention to use cybercounseling, attitude toward using cybercounseling, subjective norm of using cybercounseling, perceived behavioral control of using cybercounseling, attitude toward the Internet, attitude toward seeking psychological help, attitude toward e-service, social stigma of seeking psychological help, computer self-efficacy, and the self-stigma of seeking psychological help. Data were analyzed using Principal Components Analysis (PCA), T-test, and Multiple Regression (MR). Findings - In the younger group, a significant gender difference was found in intention to use cybercounseling, but in the old generation the difference was v non-significant. A greater number of males than females in the younger group showed an intention to use cybercounseling. Independent variables in the E-TPB were able to significantly predict the corresponding dependent variables. Value - This study provides a more extensive perspective on the intention to use cybercounseling, and promotes its development in mainland China to help more people deal with mental health issues.
