Title

澳門私立中學女性教師的職業選擇與晉遷

English Abstract

In education, the majority of female teachers are limited to teaching jobs, and few female teachers are seen as administrators and executives. Women's career choices and career moves are still hindered by social norms and family constraints. By investigating the career choice and career advancement of secondary school female teachers in Macau, this study hopes to inform the government and schools of the ability and situation of female teachers, and also allow female teachers to understand their own advantages, not belittle themselves, and adapt with a positive attitude when facing their work, family and personal conflicts. This thesis is a qualitative-based research that uses in-depth interviews to study the career choice and career advancement of female teachers in Macau private secondary schools. Findings from this study can be summarized into two parts: first, career choices are affected by altruistic factors like love of children and contribution to society; intrinsic factors such as the ambition to be a professional, personal interest on teaching; and extrinsic factors including salary, holiday, influenced by the others. On the other hand, the obstacles that the interviewees faced in their career advancement can be classified into internal obstacles like sex-role stereotyping, role conflict, etc., and external obstacles such as the lack of encouragement, family responsibilities, lack of mobility, etc.
