English Abstract

In this study, the four major themes of scientific literacy are (a) The knowledge of scientific concepts, (b) The nature of scientific inquiry, (c) The ideas of science, and (d) The relationships among science, technology, society and environment. According to the themes mentioned above, Content Analysis Method was used to analyze the distribution of the themes of Scientific Literacy in the content of the three textbooks for form 4 students commonly used in Macau Physics courses. There are altogether three key findings: (a) the Oxford version is centered on student which the PEP version is academic oriented; (b) the old edition of PEP emphasize academic knowledge and the new edition give emphasis to the ideas of science, but the Oxford one focuses on the scientific inquiry and STSE approach; (c) as far as “Curriculum Balance” is concerned, the best is the new edition of PEP version, and the old edition of PEP version is better than the Oxford one. To conclude, according to the current situations in Macau, this study proposes several suggestions for everyone: (a) DSEJ offers expert advice, local Physics teachers training courses so that teachers have more guidance on designing the new series of textbooks which meet The Requirements of Basic Academic Attainments in Physics. (b) the Oxford version is iii the main teaching resources and the PEP one can be used as secondary supporting materials by making reference to the Mainland China and Hong Kong textbooks. (c) it is proposed that textbooks should provide a wider range of relevant local examples so that the localized materials can motivate students to focus more on their own community.
