Urban Metabolism Evaluation for Independent System and Simulation about Metabolism of Macao By Liu Lu (Deer) Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Lou, Inchio Urban metabolism analysis has become an important tool for the study of urban ecosystems. The metabolism of a city can be seen as the processes by which the city transforms the materials and energy it requires to sustain its socioeconomic activity. In the present study, we analyzed the anabolic and catabolic flows that occur during Macao’s urbanization processes. From 2003 to 2013, Macao had experienced an economic boom accompanied by rapid social development. Macao is a tourist city with a dense population, but is short on natural resources; thus, most of its life-support services depend on resource imports from outside its system. By employing systems ecology based on mass, energy, and emergy metrics, we were able to quantitatively describe the city’s resource metabolism. We found that by relying on a large amount of inflows to support anabolism compared with catabolic flows, Macao was able to absorb large amounts of negative-entropy materials, and that these flows of resources supported both its survival and its booming development. We also found tremendously high heat dissipation, and that after accounting for catabolism, the city retained less than 10% of the total input for anabolism. The anabolism(life-support resources, order maintenance resources, living resources, development resource) and catabolism flows (liquid wastes, solid wastes, and gaseous wastes) during the urban activities such as net resources import and discharged wastes are classified and compiled for Macao metropolis from 2003 to 2013. For different urban period the main metabolism factor have different behave. In urban evaluation the main metabolism factors usually change due to the urban structure changing, the government regulation action and other changing conditions. Our research shown in emergy metric the proportion of the life resource was decreased as the time on, that result comes from the fact that the main role for anabolism from 2003 to 2009 was life resource, and then it decreased to equal to the live resource in 2011, and finally it was less than the live resource in 2013. In mass and emergy metros both per capita and per area density are increasing as the time on. But for energy metro the per capita density is decreasing while per area density is increasing. After deduced the reasonable data the metabolism density trend of the same period is also discussed; our research conclusion is helpful for the policy maker in city plan and management. The city is (now) conceived as a dynamic and complex ecosystem. This is not a metaphor, but a concept of a real city (Newman, 1999). The metabolism of a city can be seen as the processes by which the city transforms the materials and energy is requires to sustain its socioeconomic activity (Lei et al., 2015).The use of the metabolism concept, expanded to include aspects of livability, is applied to cities to demonstrate the practical meaning of sustainability. During the past 10 years, Macao has experienced an economic boom accompanied by rapid social development, in which the gambling industry and related tourism services have become the main economic activity. We analyzed the anabolic and catabolic flows that occur during Macao’s urbanization process. By simulating the emergy trends using the STELLA dynamic modeling software, we predicted the evolution of Macao’s development and trends in coming 10 years.
