Title

The transformation of earth god festivals in Macao

English Abstract

In the old areas of Macao, earth god shrines were easy to find no matter on lanes, alleys, streets and blocks. Even some communities have specific earth god temple to let neighbors worship earth god. Nowadays, when the earth god festival comes, people of different communities are steadily celebrating the earth god festival in public space on 2nd February in the lunar calendar. However, throughout the social development of Macao, in particular the impacts in the twentieth century the two times of suspensions, which are the Second World War and the period from mid-sixties to late seventies, and also the process of urbanization of Macao society. Under these historical factors, both the procedures of rituals and activities and the relative organizations of earth god festivals in Macao have followed to change. This study proposes to explore the transformations of earth god festivals in different communities mainly from the mid-twentieth century to present days to find out the distinguishing features of Macao's earth god festival. Meanwhile to discuss how the earth god festival as a religious activity having the social function to strengthen the solidarity of a community under the interaction between neighbors.
