Title

Translating TED talk videos : a translation with reflective commentary

English Abstract

Abstract The translation project consists of two parts: the translation and the commentary. The translation project is about interlingual subtitling. I processed bilingual subtitles on the screen. The STs (3 videos) are chosen from TED.com and they are a kind of edutainment video where 3 different presenters with different background are sharing their expertise through a speech. I have to take care the translation and technical aspects of the final product. For the translation part, register shifts between STS and TTS are my main concern. The speeches (STs) are tailored in each part to produce an extremely personally styled message. To retain the register of the original in the TT, there are different variables to be considered. The tenor affected by different user varieties, and also affected by the other variables, affects the interpersonal distance and the affective involvement. Therefore, I have to pay attention to the different style shifts and assign different styles to the TTS according to the characters so as to maintain the same effect the ST has impacted on the ST readers. For the technical part, the translation strategy is constrained by multimedia translation. I try to synchronize the translated subtitle and use linear translation as much as possible. There is also a technique in the sentence segmentation and limitation in solution due to the reason that the screen translation (T T) has a short life. Some other translation challenges such as translating proper names are identified and resolved accordingly.
