Chinese lexical borrowings in English

English Abstract

Abstract of thesis entitled Chinese Lexical Borrowings in English. Submitted by Zheng Liuyao, M-B2-4142-5 for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Macau in February 2016. ABSTRACT As the contact between Chinese and English languages gradually intensifies, it has become worthwhile to study the current status of Chinese lexical borrowings in English, especially since the last comprehensive and thorough research was carried out nearly three decades ago by Garland Cannon (1988). This study combines dictionaries and an online corpus to investigate language changes. First through the collection of borrowings from published articles, the Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam- Webster Unabridged, and then the selection of data, 448 items are found. Compared with Cannon's (1988) list, results from consultation of Chinese lexical borrowings in six most updated leading dictionaries show a 41.7% growth in their quantity of general acceptance in English. Mandarin loanwords take a leading role. The Corpus of Comtemporary Amerian English saw 86.4% of borrowings with one to six appearances, and more than half existing items exhibit upward trends in time. Moreover, magazines and academic journals tend to be the genres in which Chinese borrowings mostly take place, whereas spoken genre includes the least amount of borrowings. Genereally speaking, the more often some borrowings have already taken place, the more likely they will appear again in the future. The influence of Chinese culture on English lies mainly in such fields as food and drink, and history and politics. Key words: Chinese lexical borrowings, dictionary, Corpus of Comtemporary Amerian English
