ABSTRACT The Analects has been translated into over 60 languages and also has a large number of English versions. A great number of studies have been conducted on the translation of The Analects, but very few are conducted systematically on a lexical level from a descriptive perspective. This study adopts the translation strategies proposed by Baker (2011) to analyse the culture-specific terms in Lin Yutang's and D. C. Lau's versions accordingly. It shows that Lin uses PARAPHRASE most frequently while Lau adopts CULTURAL SUBSTITUTION predominantly. The study also examines possible reasons for the discrepancies in the different translation strategies adopted by the two translators, which include (1) different purposes, (2) different target readership and (3) the time difference between the two versions were published. This thesis provides a framework to analyse the culture-specific terms in the Chinese-English translation of The Analects and it could possibly be used for the translation of ancient Chinese classic texts in general.
