ABSTRACT This dissertation consists of two parts. Part One presents the translation of the application forms for Macao public housing and guidelines for application, which includes social housing and economical housing. Part Two is the commentary. There is little English information about the public housing in Macao, even Housing Bureau has not offered relevant English version of the application form so far. In order to attain the purpose of providing an informative and comprehensive English translation of the information about public housing for the applicants, functionalist theories of translation proposed by Katherina Reiss, Hans J. Vermeer and Christiane Nord are reviewed. Different translation methods are used to produce the natural equivalent in accordance with the function served in the source text. The commentary shares the experience as a translator during the translation process. Firstly, it presents functionalist theories of translation, including Resis's text typology, Vermeer's skopos theory and Nord's translation-oriented model which is applied in the analysis of the materials to be translated. Then it discusses about the major problems or challenges encountered in translation mostly related to style, syntactic structure and lexical terms. Under the theoretical foundation, several strategies are concluded and applied to achieve the expected effects. The author hopes more people to make an attempt to translate the public information into English as it can not only improve the translation skills but also facilitate the access of people who do not know Chinese and Portuguese to public services.
