This thesis investigates the syntax of the ditransitive constructions in English and Cantonese. The objectives are to explore the ditransitive constructions in these two languages from the framework of the Minimalist approach, and to compare the ditransitive constructions between these two languages. The ditransitive construction is a very important syntactic phenomenon in most of the languages in the world. It is one of the syntactic aspects showing diversification of syntactic word order and underlying syntactic structures. This paper presents the comparative study between the ditransitive constructions in Cantonese and those in English in terms of their linear word-order, syntactic structures and semantic differences from the perspective of vP-shell structure in the Minimalist approach. The major contribution of the paper is that the vP-shell hypothesis within the framework of Minimalism is extended to analyze both the archetypical and non-archetypical language use in English and Cantonese. It is proved that the underlying syntactic structures of the double object constructions in English and Cantonese are the same and that Cantonese prepositional dative construction runs parallel to English's counterpart. It is hoped that the comprehensive comparisons will shed some light on the broader and deeper understanding of the ditransitive constructions and the syntax of Cantonese and English. Some meaningful implications were drawn in the aspect that people's actual language use in social life may not comply with the standard and archetypical language forms.
