Miyazaki Hayao is considered to be one of the most influential animators and an ecological economist whose films have been popular around the world. His films emphasize environmentalism, pacifism and feminism. He is also critical of capitalism and globalization and their impact upon modern life. However, rather little attention has yet been paid to how Miyazaki has done in creating his film in constructing this outcome. This paper examines how Miyazaki put a huge number of fragments and chaos together carefully when creating a world to make his story. The objective of this study is to apply visual textual analysis on "My Neighbor Totoro", one of Miyazaki's most influential and acclaimed films. In addition, the practices of visual signification were conducted to show how the deployment of a particular visual sign comes to take on significance and sense within the context in the film. The findings illustrate one of the ways that the world of children is set against and differentiated from the values of capitalism is through the strong emphasis that is placed on play as an alternative form of value. This is also the reason why almost all of his movies are about or involve children.
