Title

Framing protest : testing the protest paradigm devices in Hong Kong press coverage of Occupy Central Movement in 2014

English Abstract

The current study conducts a cross-national research and examines whether the US-oriented 'protest paradigm' exists in the context of Hong Kong. Based on Shoemaker & Reese's (1996) theoretical foundation- factors influencing media content and framing theory, taking the quantitative approach and research method of content analysis, this study examines whether the US- oriented protest paradigm exists in the Hong Kong press coverage of Occupy Central Movement in 2014. By testing each protest paradigm device that appearing or not appearing in the mainstream press of Hong Kong- Apple Daily, Ming Pao Daily, Economic Journal and Ta Kung Pao, this study analyzes the national differences between US and Hong Kong for the generation of protest paradigm. The findings show that the protest paradigm is apparently showing in the news coverage of Ta Kung Pao, Ming Pao Daily and Economic Journal, while it doesn't exist in Apple Daily. For the generation of protest paradigm devices or protest alternative devices, it is a result of joint effects from the political ideology of press, media routines, media marketization and so on. The current research also put forward a new protest theoretical framework which is based on the media context of Hong Kong and need to be further examined in other national context.
