Title

A case study on the images of females in the reality show Now Here Girls : did it empowered or stereotyped females?

English Abstract

This paper studies how media stereotype women and explore the effects of this action on the audiences. Content analysis and focus group interviews were adopted in the investigation of a reality show titled Now Here Girls that was broadcasted in Hong Kong TVB Jade Channel in 2014. According to the investigation results, the reality show stereotyped women in a traditional way, even though it claimed that it was empowering female characters by coaching them to improve themselves. From the content analysis of this program, it is found that women without the qualities of those traditionally considered to be good, such as prettiness, tenderness, delicateness, and sophistication, were negatively represented. Based on the focus group interviews with the audiences, even the audiences held a critical attitude towards this kind of program. Male interviewees tended to believe that the show humiliated women by mocking their shortcomings to boost its audience rating. Meanwhile, female interviewees thought that this program undermined the image of women with good careers, instead of trying to help women. It can be concluded that this kind of program has not only little effect on empowering women, but also a bigger impact on enhancing patriarchal ideology that oppresses women.
