The implantation of value system in narrative of food documentary : case analysis on food documentary film "A Bite of China"

This study adopts the content analysis to examine value system implanted in the Chinese food documentary 'A Bite of China' series. In order to better examine the value system in this documentary better, another west food documentary 'Two Greedy Italians' is selected to make a comparison with 'A Bite of China' in this project. In total, there are 182 stories and 22 episodes will be analyzed in this study and three value systems 'Enjoyment of life' value, 'Family' value, 'National and culture' need to be identified in both documentaries. The result finds that in 'A Bite of China' the "National and cultural' value system is presented the most significant. And the specific values are: 'History and Culture Continuity' value, 'Cultural Diversity and Fusion' value and 'Co-existence' values. In comparison, the most presented value system in Two Greedy Italians' is the basic food value system 'Enjoyment of life' value system. Specific values presented in the 'Two Greedy Italians' are 'Delicious', 'Happiness time' and 'Organic'. In General, family, nations and national values are proved implanted in 'A Bite of China' series in this study. 'A Bite of China' is not only a food film but a tool to use food culture to enhance national identity in order to introduce China to the world.
