Title

Decentralization and local corruption in the transformation of China

English Abstract

The thesis aims at comparing the self-image and western image of the DPRK, and then tries to probe the reasons leading to the contrasts to the images, and the impacts on the contrasts to the images. This thesis applies framing analysis to study the details of the self-image and western image of the DPRK. The thesis extracts the news reports of the KCNA, AP and Reuters in January and March in 2014 and 2015. The self-image of the DPRK appears to be designed and planned in the two years. The self-image of the DPRK appears to be respected and responsive with a great leader revealing by the classifications of news themes, types of source and choice of words and so forth. The western media build an evil and troublesome image for the DPRK. The western media seem to focus on the gossip personal life of the DPRK’s leader. Nevertheless the western media would also show that the DPRK could be a victim sometimes. In comparison, the self-image and western image of the DPRK focus on the different aspects of the images via different description style. The KCNA does not pay attention to the policies of the DPRK, but the AP and Reuters pay attention to the negative policies of the DPRK. The AP and Reuters do not pay attention to the domestic development of the DPRK, while the KCNA values the news theme of domestic achievements. The reports of the AP and Reuters apply abundant news 4 sources and components of news report while the KCNA not. The reports of the KCNA show personal feelings while the reports of the AP and Reuters not. The reasons leading to the contrasts to the self-image and western image of the DPRK would be news value and cultural stereotype, writing style, media’s relations with the audience and the situation of DPRK. Image of one country’ would affect its relations between other countries. If the western media keep viewing the DPRK as an evil country detaining foreigners and abusing human rights, they would affect the West to apply violent and uncompromising ways to deal with the DPRK. And if the DPRK keeps picturing the West as a hostile enemy, it would leave no space for them to negotiate in the future. However, the overlap of the self-image and western image, the DPRK’s inclination toward the western writing style and the western media’s purse toward the news stories of the DPRK reveal the possibilities for them to cooperate.
