Myanmar has implemented a series of democratization actions since Thein Sein came to power. These reforms include political and economic aspects. Western countries have all welcomed the reforms taking place in Myanmar. Though they all still doubted whether the Myanmar military junta and the new civilian government, with its military background, would continue and consolidate their democratization, the relations between Western countries and Myanmar have resumed. Conversely, China-Myanmar relations have experienced some changes. At the beginning of Myanmar’s democratization, some large programs invested in by China were suspended by the Myanmar government because of strong objections by the public. The China-Myanmar relationship experienced a sharp decline after a long period of intimate relations. China’s annual investment in Myanmar also fell sharply. There are many analyses about the reasons why China-Myanmar relations have experienced some changes. My thesis will apply the balance of power theory to figure out the reason. Four cases will be used to demonstrate the arguments. The main argument of this thesis is that the balancing policy or actions of Myanmar and other main powers caused the adjustment to the China-Myanmar relation. The Myanmar democratization process has just played an assisting role.
