The aim of this thesis is to explain a central Chinese idea, guanxi, through the plays of a Chinese American writer, David Henry Hwang, namely Golden Child and Chinglish. How guanxi functions differently in the two plays is one of the main concerns, and because guanxi is rooted in a Chinese ideal, it keeps updating itself as China changes.
