Title

Realization of appellative functions in E-C translation : a case study of entertainment news headline

English Abstract

Entertainment is a form of activity that mainly aims at giving pleasure and delight to the audience. In this fast-paced and high-pressured society, people cannot live without entertainment. The main purpose of entertainment news is to entertain readers, as well as drawing people’s attention to entertainment events. The objective of this thesis is to compare the source text and the target text using Graduation, a subsystem of Appraisal Theory and to explore how appellative functions are realized in entertainment news headlines translations through various gradable resources. The thesis also looks at some possible reasons behind the appellative function deviations. Totally 100 pieces of bilingual news headlines were collected for analysis from the bilingual entertainment news section of Lanugae Tips in the newspaper China Daily. Results of qualitative and quantitative analysis indicate that the dominant function of entertainment news is appellative, and the negative resources are widely used in scaling up in force in order to achieve the appellative functions in E-C entertainment headline translations. It is to be hoped that this thesis will shed some lights for future researchers in the area of entertainment news translation.
