Title

An exploratory study of the association between parent-adolescent relationship and family sex communication in Chinese context

English Abstract

Prior research has documented that family sex communication is not common between parents and adolescents and feeling uncomfortable toward the communication is one of the challenges for them. Little was known in previous studies about the correlations among parent-adolescent relationship, comfort level toward discussion of sexual topics and family sex communication. This study examined (1) similarities as well as differences of parent-adolescent relationship (including attachment styles to the primary caregiver, parent-adolescent closeness, and parenting styles) and sex-related variables (focusing on the comfort level toward discussion of sexual topics, general orientation toward family sex communication and sexual knowledge test) by gender and regional groups; (2) the association between parent-adolescent relationship and sex-related variables in two regional groups, namely, Mainland China and Macau; (3) the predictors of sex-related variables by regional groups; and (4) the association between general orientation toward family sex communication and sexual knowledge by regional groups. T-test, Pearson correlations and multiple regression analyses were used to test hypotheses. Results showed that there were significant differences of parent-adolescent relationship and sex-related variables between adolescent males and females as well as between Mainland China and Macau. Gender and Authoritative parenting together predicted comfort level toward discussion of non-sensitive sexual topics in the Mainland Chinese group. No significant factors were found to predict comfort level toward discussion of sexual topics in the Macau group. On the other hand, comfort level toward discussion of overall sexual topics was a significant predictor of general orientation toward family sex communication for both the Mainland China and Macau groups. Moreover, mother‘s education was another significant predictor of general orientation toward family sex communication for Macau participants. Adolescents‘ sexual knowledge did not correlate with general orientation toward family sex communication in both the Mainland Chinese and Macau samples. The suggestions for dealing with family sex communication are given according to the effect of parent-adolescent relationship on comfort level toward discussion of sensitive sexual topics and non-sensitive sexual topics.
