Prior research suggests that the attributes of top management team (TMT) play an important role to foreign expansion in developed markets. Grounded on the literature of TMT faultlines and internationalization, this study proposes the hypotheses regarding TMT faultiness, TMT tenure diversity, and TMT educational diversity to cultural distance of overseas expansion from emerging markets. I further propose that TMT overlapping tenure moderate these relationships. The hypotheses were tested using a sample of the new media industry of China----the largest emerging market. I find that TMT faultlines and tenure diversity would negatively affect the cultural distance of overseas expansion of Chinese firms. I also find that TMT overlapping tenure weakens the relationship between TMT attributes (e.g., TMT faultlines, TMT tenure diversity) and cultural distance of overseas expansion. These findings have important implications for two streams of research that this study draws on and greatly extend them to the context of emerging markets.
