Title

An empirical study on voice behavior and social exchange

English Abstract

Previous studies have explored the antecedents and types of voice behavior, but voice behavior’s relationship with social exchange has rarely been examined. The study reported herein explored how different forms of social exchange are associated with promotive and prohibitive voice behavior. In addition, these different forms’ two-way interactive effects on voice were also examined. Data were collected from a two-wave survey of 199 fresh graduates of the University of Macau who had taken up positions in a variety of fields. The results show that leader-member exchange \(LMX\) is positively related to both types of voice behavior, whereas perceived organizational support \(POS\) is positively related only to promotive voice. Further, POS strengthens LMX’s positive effect on prohibitive voice, whereas workplace ostracism weakens its positive effect on promotive voice. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.
