Macau, in addition to its reputation as the world’s number one casino city, is also positioned as the communicative platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries for historical reasons. However, this platform seemingly hasn’t played well, by serving as an intermediary. To explain the awkwardness, the relationship with Brazil is the weakness that needs to be resolved. As we know, Brazil is the most influential and strongest country among Portuguese-speaking countries, in addition to having a close partnership with China. To be honest, Macau apparently has no strong relationship with Brazil in terms of its economy, culture or other aspects. Through place branding theory and marketing analysis, this article will explore what difficulties Macau is confronting and why Macau has missed positions and opportunities that it should have grasped at. By emphasizing the place branding with Brazil, it will illustrate the clear direction that Macau should take to consolidate its role as the connecting bridge between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
