Title

Accounting comparability of mandatory new accounting standards adoption in China

English Abstract

In this paper, we focus on the accounting information comparability in China, which is an arresting topic in the world as IFRS adoption. Previous studies state that the impact of IFRS adoption on accounting comparability is positive. As new Chinese Accounting Standards, has similar requirements as IFRS, issued in 2007, we infer it will improve the accounting comparability and lower the cost of information acquired in China. In this paper, we use an input method, introduced by Bradshaw (2009), to measure the accounting methods similarity among industry peers to represent comparability. Our sample contains the listed firms in China from year 2003 to 2010. The results show that the accounting information comparability improves as the new Chinese Accounting Standards adoption. The incremental change in comparability has the highest magnitude from 2006 to 2007 during eight years (2003-2010). We also certify the impact of earnings quality on comparability, finding that the accounting information comparability improves more when new Chinese Accounting Standards is implemented in firms with high earnings quality. As a result of it, the value relevance of accounting information between returns and earnings is enhanced. The new accounting standards in China reach the target of improving comparability and providing more value relevance information in our empirical research.
