In 2014, the most controversial issue in Hong Kong was the “Occupy Central” protests, regarding how Hong Kong should implement universal suffrage in the election of the 2017 chief executive. Opinions on different aspects of this issue were posted on social media sites like Facebook, causing a heated discussion not only in Hong Kong but also in Macau. Based on the results of a telephone survey conducted in October 2014, quantitative analysis is used in this thesis to test the spiral of silence in Macau’s social media environment. It is hypothesized that the spiral of silence also exists in Macau’s social media platform; people will remain silent if they perceive that they are in minority. Moreover, the frequency of social media usage, differences in age, educational level and social status will influence people’s willingness to speak out on social media.
