Rhetorical visions of migrant workers in China : a fantasy theme analysis of migrant worker Weibo groups

English Abstract

This research employs symbolic convergence theory and the method of content analyses to examine online text messages of migrant workers on Weibo. 1544 posts comments in "Foxconn beating event" and 2041 posts comments in "Primary schools for children of migrant workers are banned event" on Sina Weibo were analyzed in the study. There are five fantasy themes found in the Foxconn beating events which are: Foxconn is a concentration camp, is a jail; Poor workers are used as a tool to make money for Foxconn; Migrant workers involved are an uprising army; Poor workers cause social unrest; Migrant workers are contemporary red guards. Five fantasy themes are discovered from the event of "Primary schools for children of migrant workers were banned in Beijing." Mass revolt against oppressing officials; Then Money contribution for foreign country, have no money for children at home; Discrimination against peasant class; Tragedy of education, and lastly, Beijing is indifferent. The rhetorical visions from the two events indicate the diversity of discussions on Weibo for migrant workers.
