Title

An analysis of representations of Macau identity in Macau Government Tourist Office audio visual texts from 1998 to 2013

English Abstract

Macau, as a past Portuguese Colony and the Special Administrative Region of China, is place where divergent East and West cultures meet and coexist harmoniously. Previous scholarship about representations of Macau's identity has focused on social and cultural texts and contexts. This research takes a different approach in considering how official tourism promotional videos present Macau’s identity to target audiences from 1998 to 2013. The analysis looks into the change in styles, themes and images in these promotional A/V texts, and organizes and considers them in 3 stages: Macau before the Handover, Macau after the Handover, and recent Macau. Promoting Macau as a rising “World Centre of Tourism and Culture”, the videos showcase different facets of Macau in order, this dissertation will argue, to attract younger and more diverse tourist demographics. Consequently the Portuguese aspect of Macau's representational identity is presented as an historical, architectural and cultural backdrops, with greater emphasis now being placed on Macau as an exciting, modern tourist destination; at the same time this 'modern Macau' is still presented as a place of cultural hybridity and harmony, where East and West coexist.
