The purpose of this paper is to explore the process of event branding of CAEXPO, which is how the event was built in the promotional videos by Chinese officials, and how its image was received in the counterpart of the overseas audiences after watching the videos. To aid my thesis, I used Symbolic Convergence Theory and Fantasy Theme Analysis to analyze the fantasy themes and fantasy types in the official promotional videos and also that of focus group interviews among overseas audiences. The analysis showed that the event branded in the promotional videos does not correspondent to the image of it in overseas audiences’ mind, which hampers the branding of the event and even the image of the host city. In this thesis, useful suggestions were also given on how to brand an event more effectively in detail according to the shared and unshared fantasy themes and types.
